After graduating from the University of Oxford, where she was a member of Lady Margaret Hall, Lawson started work as a book reviewer and restaurant critic, later becoming the deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times in 1986.

During the summer of 2004, the programme temporarily moved to BBC One and aired as Saturday Brunch, live from Worrall Thompson's home. Appearing as a judge on Aged just 25, Hansom spent five years at The Ritz progressing from commis to chef de partie, and has also appeared on BBCs Million Pound Menu.
